Day 3 was again an incredible informative day. We visited
places important to California politics outside of the capitol building. The
day started at the office of Students First, a 501(c)4 political non-profit
organization working for the needs of students. We generously got breakfast offered and as we
were sipping our coffees and munching on our bagels we enjoyed amazing
presentations on their organization and specifically their policy agenda. The
presentation mainly evolved around their efforts for socioeconomic integration
in public schools to improve the academic achievements of students from all
income levels. We learned about specific models in practice around the country,
implemation challenges and strategies on how they are trying to meet their
goals. Especially when Eric Lerum, the VP of National Policy presented we got
treated with a perfect example of great characteristics, knowledge and public
speaking skills a person needs to get to high leader positions.
Our next stop was at Sacramento’s city hall. After a little
tour in the building and great information on the strong vs. weak mayor system
as well as possible internships we got to meet the mayor himself. Kevin Johnson
was incredibly nice and took his time to answer many of our questions. Again we
met a charismatic, hardworking individual that is an inspiration for all of us.
Our last stop was at the office of the California attorney
general. We got to talk to two lawyers of the office that kindly explained the office’s function and gave us an insight into the
department of justice in the state government. I’m very happy
and grateful for this exciting, educating amazing opportunity we share here in
Sacramento.
We all can make it far in life, especially with great opportunities like the Sacramento internship program.
Stay awesome and down to earth!
Chelsea
